Born on January 15, 1948, in Jacksonville, Van Zant became famous for his powerful voice, charismatic stage presence, and songwriting contributions to classic rock songs such as Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird. His lyrics often reflected themes of Southern pride, freedom, and everyday life. Tragically, Van Zant died at the age of 29 in the 1977 Convair CV-240 crash that also claimed the lives of several others associated with the band.
